Pop-Up Swabbing Station Surprises Dublin Shoppers
At Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, a surprising spectacle stopped shoppers in their tracks. Initial Hygiene’s ‘Hygiene Angels’ launched a pop-up stand with one clear purpose: to prove how much bacteria we could unknowingly be carrying on our hands and everyday items.
The team invited the public to witness hygiene in action, offering live demonstrations of bacterial swabbing and real-time testing technology.
Seeing Is Believing: The Science Behind the Swab
Using ATP* swabs and an ATP bioluminescence reader, the team tested shoppers’ hands and personal items such as mobile phones, wallets and handbags. The bioluminescence reader detects levels of biological life not visible to the human eye.
Dr Colm Moore, Regional Technical Manager with Initial Hygiene Ireland, led the initiative. “People are often surprised when they see the level of contamination on things they touch all the time,” he said. “Our Hygiene Angels ‘swabbing zone’ is a fun and effective way to encourage better hygiene habits.”
(*ATP = Adenosine Triphosphate, a molecule found in all living cells, used as a marker for biological contamination.)
From Phones to Filth: A Wake-Up Call
Research has shown that personal items like mobile phones and handbags can contain more bacteria than toilet seats. In some cases, test results were over seven times higher than the accepted benchmark for cleanliness.
Items such as mobile phones are handled constantly. With each interaction, germs can be spread from surface to another in a process known as cross contamination. Since hands are responsible for 80 percent of infections, the risk of spreading illness is significant.
Hand Hygiene: Small Habit, Big Impact
Washing your hands for just 20 to 30 seconds, roughly the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice, can make a meaningful difference.
It’s not just about washing. Drying is critical, too. Damp hands are much more likely to transfer bacteria, so drying thoroughly after washing them is essential.
Bacteria thrives at 37oC, our body temperature and can survive on hands for several hours.
