Waste Management Act 1996 & amendment 2001

Clinical Waste Management Regulations set strict controls on organisations that handle and store clinical waste

The Waste Management Act, 1996 was enacted in May, 1996. This Act was subsequently amended by the Waste Management (Amendment) Act 2001 and the Protection of the Environment Act 2003.

The act is a comprehensive regulatory framework for the application of higher environmental standards, in response to EU and national requirements

The act develops the principal that producers of healthcare risk/ hazardous waste are primarily responsible for the handling, treatment and proper disposal of all waste produced onsite.
